Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is an essential nutrient needed by our bodies which we cannot synthesise ourselves so must be obtained through the diet. It is an antioxidant and is required for the production of collagen, keeping the skin, blood vessels and soft tissues like gums healthy. Supplementation may also reduce the duration of common colds. Foods containing high concentrations of vitamin C include citrus fruits, like oranges, lemons and grapefruit; tomatoes, green peppers and potatoes.
